
The course is designed to develop a deep knowledge and recognition of the links between food, nutrition and health and an understanding of food science and nutrition is relevant to many industries and job roles. Students will have the opportunity to learn about the relationship between the human body and food as well as practical skills for cooking and preparing food. It is mainly designed for those wanting to pursue careers or learning in the food industry. Each unit has an applied purpose which acts as a focus for the learning in the unit and requires learners to consider how the use and application of their learning impacts on themselves, individuals, employers, society and the environment. Unit 1 focuses on the importance of food safety, properties of nutrients, the relationship between nutrients and the human body and being able to plan nutritional requirements. Unit 2 – Ensuring Food is Safe to Eat This is a mandatory unit and will be externally assessed but completed in 8 hours of lesson time under exam conditions (May/June). There are two further optional units. There are many degree courses that lead into the food or health industries such as Sport Nutrition, Dietetics or Product Development.
QEHS 42 Points. Grade 6 in GCSE Food Preparation & Nutrition or Catering is recommended.
