Course summary

N.B: the continuation of the Applied Science course is dependent on upcoming government decisions; we will update accordingly. What is Applied Science BTEC National and why study it? The BTEC Level 3 Nationals have been designed in consultation with employers and higher education institutions. This makes the qualification a recognised and well-respected route into employment or higher education. Scientists will enjoy a stimulating course of study and develop the skills and attributes that reflect modern industry practices. We will be offering the Applied Science National Extended Diploma; equivalent to 3 A-levels. Students will cover units looking at areas such as: • How the human body works and ways to diagnose and treat health problems • The principles of energy and waves including how both apply to engines and medicine • Use of a range of lab equipment and techniques needed in science careers Students will also complete modules that relate directly to a range of disciplines and careers; for example, nursing, radiography, forensic science, physiotherapy and pharmacy. The course is assessed in a variety of styles to enable all learners to achieve their best. The assessment types include: • Drafting research reports • Carrying out projects for which they have a choice over the direction and outcomes • Demonstration of practical and technical skills using appropriate equipment and techniques. Most of the course is weighted towards internal and ongoing assessment. A small proportion of the qualification is assessed by external exams. This may support the achievement of students who would struggle in A-Level qualifications which are assessed only through examinations. Where next? The BTEC Level 3 Nationals are accepted by over 150 UK universities and higher education institutes for relevant degree programmes. The Level 3 Applied Science National qualification can lead directly to a number of different Higher Education courses such as Analytical Chemistry, IT/Computing, Biomedical science and Forensic Science. The Level 3 Applied Science National qualifications also prepare students for degree level apprenticeships in areas such as physiotherapy, pharmacy and research. Unsurprisingly, 62% of large companies have recruited employees with BTEC qualifications. What are the entrance requirements? GCSE Combined Science Grade 5-5 or 5s in triple sciences with Grade 5 in GCSE English and Mathematics. Grade 4s will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Who do I need to see for more information?
