Course summary

The key focus in the course is to develop transferrable problem solving skills in a range of applied contexts. This course is especially useful for students who wish to study Biology, Economics, Psychology, Sociology or Geography at University or at A-Level due to the statistical content. During the course students will study: Use of spreadsheets, modelling and estimation, statistical problem solving - mainly with GCSE techniques, financial problem solving - including percentages and foreign exchange, exponential growth, standard form, logarithmic scales on graphs, graphs and gradient as rate of change, probability and risk. Core Maths is ideal for those who want to learn how to apply advanced mathematics in real contexts and will train you in analysing real life data. The course has the equivalent UCAS points to an AS level and will be taught in one year. There is a considerable amount of material that will be new which is studied in much more detail than at GCSE, and so a hard working attitude is essential. Other skills developed Analysis of Data, Maths for Personal Finance and Estimation The focus is on real world maths that will enable students to make quick, useful calculations in a real world context. This could be to do with how much national insurance they are paying, analysing the interest they are receiving by considering the compounding effect and the rate of inflation, or working out whether to keep some of those Euros from their last holiday by looking at long term exchange rates. This module is a toolkit for every student to help them with the maths all around them. Statistical Techniques Students will learn how to analyse data using the normal distribution. In particular, they will learn how to use confidence intervals to describe the likelihood of an event occurring. This will be useful for anyone studying Psychology, Geography or Economics. Students will also study correlation and regression which will help with analysing how two variables are linked. These skills are widely used in many social science subjects. Career value All of the content is based on maths that can and is used in industry and government. With the increased use of mathematical ideas and thinking in nearly all subjects at AS and A level, it is a course that has massive benefits for every student. A student’s view "I would really recommend this course for someone taking Psychology or Biology - it has helped me a lot" "I enjoy this course because I really feel like I am gaining skills that will be useful in later life".
