Course summary

An A level in Physical Education will equip students with both a depth and breadth of knowledge, understanding and skills relating to scientific, socio-cultural and practical aspects of physical education and sport. The content has been designed to allow students to study Physical Education (PE) in an academic setting, enabling them to critically analyse and evaluate their physical performance and apply their experience of practical activity in developing their knowledge and understanding of the subject. The combination of physical performance and academic challenge in this qualification provides an exciting opportunity for students. At both AS and A Level students will cover five broad components which are further subdivided into additional topic areas: 1. Physiological factors affecting performance: applied anatomy and physiology; exercise physiology and biomechanics. 2. Psychological factors affecting performance: skill acquisition and sports psychology. 3. Socio-cultural issues in physical activity and sport: sport and society; contemporary issues such as deviance, sportsmanship and ethics. 4. Practical Performance: Students will be assessed on their core and advanced skills in performing or coaching one activity. 5. Evaluating and Analysing performance for improvement: This component draws upon the knowledge, understanding and skills a student has learnt throughout the course and enables them to analyse and evaluate a peer’s performance in one activity. Career value This course is ideal for those students intending to pursue any career for which an understanding of the human body, or human behaviour is desirable as they’re encouraged to develop an awareness of the role of PE in society and its application to many situations. This course will prepare students for the further study of PE or sports science courses as well as other related subject areas such as psychology, sociology and biology. Students will also develop the transferable skills that are recognised by further education, Higher Education and employers in all sectors of industry. Many of our previous students have gone on to read Sport and Exercise Science at top institutions in the country or pursued careers in teaching, coaching or professional sport. Others have gained jobs in the leisure industry, recreational management, or the health and fitness industry by using the skills they developed throughout the course. Suitability Must play competitive sport or coach sport regularly. You will be expected to belong to a club/team outside of school as well as attending school clubs and practices. APS 4.5 A student’s view “The A level Physical Education course provides students with the opportunity to study sport and exercise in a much more academic, scientific way. It is also great that I can be accredited for both my practical abilities and my passion for all things to do with sport!”
