Course summary

hroughout your studies, you will learn the language in the context of Spanish-speaking countries and the issues and influences which have shaped them. The course is topic based and deals with the following broad issues: AS Social issues and trends – aspects of Hispanic society: Equality, cyberspace, modern and traditional values Political and artistic culture: Spanish regional identity, modern day idols, cultural heritage The opportunity to study a work of literature and/or a film A Level AS level topics plus… Multiculturalism in the Hispanic world: Immigration, racism, integration Aspects of political life in the Hispanic world: Today’s youth, tomorrow’s citizens, monarchies and dictatorships, popular movements A second work of literature and/or film Authentic material from the Hispanic world is used, including newspapers, magazines, on line resources, film and literature. Students are expected to carry out their own research in the language and immerse themselves in the culture. Oral work is very important – you will attend one lesson a week with the Spanish Assistant. Grammar is also an integral part of the course, to allow you to become more independent and accurate when communicating. Classes are in Spanish as much as possible, so you will have plenty of opportunity to express yourself with confidence and accuracy. You will also be encouraged to attend plays and films in Spanish. Other skills developed As well as covering advanced level study of Spanish language, this course will enable you to develop your capacity for critical thinking, and your understanding of the Hispanic world, and use your language both practically and for intellectual purposes. It will allow you to mediate between cultures, and equip you with transferrable skills like resourcefulness and cognitive flexibility which will help prepare you to take your place in a multilingual global society. Career value Spanish is a widely spoken language and is therefore a key vocational skill to your employability in the future. Language skills are increasingly required by employers in a whole range of different sectors, languages can open doors for you, and can add real value to your salary. For those looking to stand out in a tough jobs market, and for those wanting to add oomph to their CV, learning French at A level could be just the thing. At degree level, you can combine further study of language with many non-language subjects. Many degrees, including languages, often allow you to undertake study abroad. A language A level is a facilitating subject and enables you to study a wealth of different subjects at degree level. Universities believe that learning a different language displays an ability to learn a subject that is challenging and useful while developing key skills. Languages are in the top 10 most respected A level subjects. If you are planning to travel post A levels, knowledge of another language as well as English can enhance your experience. Many employers value language skills due to the impressivev communication skills gained through study and interaction with different people. A student’s view "There is a big jump from GCSE to A Level, but it is well worth the challenge! You will continue to develop your comprehension skills, develop your accuracy through grammar, and gain in fluency in speaking. You will be in a supportive environment with other students equally curious about Spanish speaking countries. Be prepared to think on a deeper level, as you will be analysing trends and culture and seeking to understand the language in context. It is a course that is full of flavour!"
