Course summary

Course outline The full title of this course is NCFE CACHE Technical Level 3 Certificate in Childcare and Education. This is a 2 year course which leads to a qualification equivalent to 1½ A levels. To achieve the qualification, students must complete 7 mandatory coursework units which are internally assessed. Learners will also complete an extended assessment which is externally set and marked. Coursework units: Unit 1: Children’s development from conception to seven years Unit 2: Children’s health and well-being Unit 3: Providing safe environments for children Unit 4: Child health Unit 5: Play and learning Unit 6: Understanding children’s additional needs Unit 7: Observation, assessment and planning The external assessment contributes 30% towards the final qualification grade. This is a synoptic assessment which requires learners to combine elements of learning and to show accumulated knowledge and understanding from all coursework units. Learners must undertake 50 hours supervised work experience within a child care setting. To participate in work experience students must have a successful DBS check. Lesson structure and expectations The theory content for a topic will be taught and then students will complete related coursework. A variety of formats will be used to complete coursework portfolios, e.g. academic posters, PowerPoint presentations, reports, journal articles, essays, booklets, practical demonstrations, activity plans and leaflets. Students will be expected to use private study time in addition to the guided learning hours. The ability to prioritise work and meet deadlines is essential. Course requirements A grade 4 in English and mathematics. A GCSE equivalent qualification in child development is desirable but not essential. Next steps Successful completion of the Technical Level 3 Certificate could lead to: • Direct entry into employment within child care. Please note: this is not an ‘Early Years Educator’ qualification. • Progression to NCFE CACHE Diploma in Childcare and Education. • Undergraduate study e.g. Nursing, Primary Teaching or Early Childhood Studies.
