A study of the variety of family forms found within historical and contemporary society, sociological perspectives within the family, marriage and the causes and consequences of marital breakdown. Education and Research Methods A study of the development of the education system, sociological perspectives, the factors that affect educational achievement such as class, gender and ethnic group. Crime and Deviance and Theories and Methods A study of crime and deviance in society and sociological perspectives on deviance. The causes of crime, the consequences and solutions. Beliefs in Society A study of the influence of religion in society, Sociological perspectives on religion, whether religion is losing its influence in contemporary society. Students will have the opportunity to gain a wide range of study skills. The first is the ability to think, to have ideas and explanations. The second is to be able to test these theories by carrying out research. Sociology provides a wide range of skills including the ability to think for yourself; to form logical and informed opinions about the world; research skills including the formation of questionnaires/interviews and the presentation of statistical data and the writing of reports.
