This is an exciting and exacting subject, delivered in an innovative and dynamic way. You’ll be part of a well-resourced and very successful department. Throughout the course, you’ll be guided and supported by our team of experienced, well-qualified Biology teachers, with a range of scientific backgrounds. Your A Level Biology studies will develop your interest in the subject, as well as aid you in building on your biological understanding and scientific skills. By the end of the course, you will have acquired both a broad knowledge-base and diverse skillset, preparing you for either further study at university, or for work. You will carry out a significant amount of practical work, including fieldwork, which not only enriches understanding of the theory but will also develop your ability to design experiments, process data and carry out statistical tests. You even get to genetically modify bacteria so that they glow in the dark! Year 1 Topics include: biochemistry, cell biology, gas exchange and circulation in plants and animals, disease and immunity, classification, and biodiversity. Year 2 Topics include: photosynthesis, respiration, homoeostasis, coordination in plants and animals, ecology, genetics, evolution, genetic engineering, and biotechnology.
A minimum of five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English Language, grade 5 or above in Maths and grade 5 or above in GCSE Biology, with a further GCSE science subject at grade 5 or above or at least 5:5 in GCSE Combined Science.
100% Exam – Three exams in the final term. Practical Endorsement in Biology - a non-exam assessment that involves carrying out 12 different practical investigations and providing evidence for each one in a folder submitted at the end of the course.
