Course summary

Sociology is the study of modern British society and how it is structured. It explores social changes over time to analyze how this has impacted the way we experience life. It aims to understand connections and patterns in human behavior and analyses our life chances and outcomes about social characteristics such as gender, social class, age, and ethnicity. What will I study over the two years? • Year 12 Autumn Term – Families and Households • Year 12 Spring Term – Education • Year 12 Summer Term – Research methods • Year 13 Autumn Term – Beliefs in society • Year 13 Spring Term – Crime and Deviance Someone who can, or wants to learn how to, think critically, question everyday assumptions and solve problems. Sociology is a theory-based, academic subject and therefore the ability to write structured and analytical essays is necessary. Sociology equips students with a set of skills that suit any profession that involves working with individuals and groups of people and understanding their behavior. People who study sociology have experience in a wide variety of jobs such as community and social work, teaching, market research, journalism, law, police, probationary and prison officers, and human resources.

Entry requirements

Grade 5 or above in Sociology (or English Language if not studied). 5 or more grades 5-9; including equivalents across at least 5 subjects. Maths and English Language Grade 4 or above. Average GCSE GRADE of at least 4.0 (average of ALL GCSE full courses taken).
