Maths is one of the Russell Group universities’ ‘facilitating’ subjects, so-called because choosing them at A Level allows a wide range of options for degree study. Sciences such as Biology, Chemistry and Physics use many mathematical techniques, and subjects such as Geography, Psychology and Sociology are also likely to have components which will be far more easily mastered by those with prior study of Mathematics. By studying maths A Level you’ll gain and work on skills such as problem solving, logic and statistics. What are the progression opportunities? Universities value Maths and it is a pre-requisite subject for a good number of degrees. Engineering and physics to name but two. People who have studied A Level Maths have an excellent choice of careers, many of which involve very well-paid professions. The course is split into 2 parts; Pure worth 2/3 of the course and Applied worth 1/3. Applied consists of Statistics and Mechanics. Specific areas of study in Pure include aspects such as algebra, differentiation, vectors and trigonometry. Statistics is statistical sampling and testing and probability. Mechanics is kinematics and forces. You sit three 2 hour papers at the end of y13. Paper 1 is 100% Pure, Paper 2 is 50% Pure & 50% Mechanics, Paper 3 is 50% Pure & 50% Statistics.
