We are delighted to offer the Classical Civilisation A Level which encompasses a wide range of topics including art, philosophy, Greek tragedy, Greek comedy, Roman religion, and epic. All texts will be studied in translation and through these texts, students will explore the historical, social, and political contexts of contemporary society. This two-year A level is therefore a comprehensive study of the ancient world. There is no course work and you do not need to know the Latin or Greek languages, but you must have a 6 grade at GCSE in either English or History. UNIT OUTLINE World of the Hero: 2 hour 30 minute paper Homer’s Odyssey and Virgil’s Aeneid Culture and the Arts: 1 hour 45 minute paper Greek Theatre including a study of Sophocles’ Oedipus; Euripides’ Bacchae and Aristophanes’ Frogs Beliefs and Ideas: 1 hour 45 minutes paper Classical thought on Greek Religion The broad nature of Classical Civilisation allows the students to follow a wide variety of career paths. The topics encourage historical inquiry, analytical skills, effective communication, and critical thinking. It is held in high esteem by Universities and would complement many other A Level courses including History, English, Philosophy, and Psychology.
The minimum requirement is three 6 grades and three others at a 5 grade. At least a grade 4 or above in English and Mathematics. Students must have a grade 6 or above at GCSE in either English or History.
There will be three examinations at the end of the two-year course, including the analysis of primary sources and essay-style questions. Students will be expected to commit to background reading, independent research, and note-taking.
