Course summary

Studying a National Extended Certificate in Health and Social Care will enable learners to gain the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to prepare them for further education and/or employment within the health and social care sector and the wider workforce. Learners will study a variety of units which will develop their skills and knowledge relating to the care and safeguarding of individuals, as well as an insight to the structure and practice of care organisations. Year 1 Unit 1: Human Lifespan Development (External Exam) Throughout this unit learners will be introduced to the biological, psychological and sociological theories associated with human lifespan development. Learners will explore the different aspects of physical, intellectual, emotional and social development across the life stages and will examine factors affecting growth and development, including genetic inheritance. Unit 5: Meeting Individual Care and Support Needs (Coursework Assessed) This unit will introduce learners to the values required for working life. Equality, diversity and discrimination will be explored and case studies will be discussed in relation to the positive promotion of equality and diversity. This Unit will also look at ethical issues and challenges that could arise in areas of employment. Leaners will explore the different methods used by professionals working together in multi-agency teams and how they meet the needs of individuals. Year 2 Unit 2: Working in Health and Social Care (External Exam) Throughout this unit learners will explore the roles and responsibilities of health and social care practitioners and the organisations they work for. Learners will also explore how standards for professionals are set out and monitored in relation to the care provided. Unit 14: Physiological Disorders (Coursework Assessed) This unit will give students the opportunity to learn about the signs and symptoms of physiological disorders and how they are investigated and diagnosed. Students will have the opportunity to create treatment plans and understand support strategies available.

Entry requirements

Level 2 Pass in Health & Social Care or Grade 4 in GCSE English.

This course is assessed through two external assessments and two internal coursework assessed units.
