Course summary

Students will grow to understand how books, verse, poetry, and prose contribute to culture. Read a variety of styles, genres, and types of literary works. Learn to contextualise and evaluate texts to deeper understand the subjects, authors, and readers. Module 1: Aspects of Tragedy: Study of three texts: one Shakespeare text; a second drama text and one further text, one of which was written pre-1900 Module 2: Elements of Social and Political Protest Writing: Study of three texts: one post-2000 prose text; one poetry and one further text, one of which was written pre-1900, and the analysis of one unseen passage. Module 3: Study of two texts: one poetry and one prose text, informed by study of a critical theory.
