Course summary

The UK film industry ranks amongst the world’s leading countries. The sector provides exciting and constantly evolving career pathways for young people. You will have the opportunity to gain important knowledge about film, and will also develop your creativity and ability to express yourself. You will study the progression of filmmaking from silent movies through to the present day. Including the significant film movements in an international context, and will also consider the contrast between independent productions and those from major movie corporations. A Level film studies allows you the opportunity to pursue your interests and curiosity in terms of both style and modern technologies. You will also learn about the working of the industry as a whole, and about audience attitudes and responses. Not only that, but you are also given the opportunity to be creative in storyboarding, scripting, filming and editing your own short film as part of your learning.

Entry requirements

5 in GCSE English Literature or Language.

How you'll be assessed

70% examined, 30% coursework. Paper 1: 2-hour paper split into Section A (a focus on US film from the Silent Era to 1990s) and Section B (European Cinema History) – a mixture of essays and shorter answers. Paper 2: 2-hour paper split into Section A (Contemporary British and US Film, where we look at The Dark Knight Rises and Ex Machina), Section B (a study of a documentary) and Section C (a focus on three films which share a common theme, and an exploration of their ideologies) – all essays. Coursework: Production of either a 5-minute short film, or 10 minute screenplay for a short film, with an evaluative analysis.
