Course summary

A level Spanish offers students a rich and comprehensive insight into the social, political, intellectual, and artistic culture of the countries and communities where Spanish is spoken. Students will develop their knowledge and understanding through speaking, listening, reading, and writing in Spanish. The study of literature and film will allow students to analyze language structures and increase their cultural and grammatical awareness. The course has a very strong focus on building students’ confidence and fluency in spoken and written Spanish. Students will develop a range of other skills including independent research and critical and analytical thinking skills. There are four themes, one of which is the historical study of the two Spains: 1936 onwards. This will include significant events that have helped shape the country.

Entry requirements

6 GCSEs between 9 to 4 (A*-C) for including 2 of English, Maths or Science. 2 should be at least grade 6 (B). GCSE grade 9-6 in perspective language OR native speakers of Spanish on consultation with the department at enrolment.

How you'll be assessed

Component 1: Speaking (30%) Oral examination: The oral examination consists of a presentation and discussion on an Independent Research Project concerning the Target Language country. (30%) Component 2: Listening, reading, and translation (50%) Written examination testing: Reading, Listening, and translation skills concerning the topics covered. (50%) Component 3: Writing (20%) Written examination testing; Two essays based on two literary texts and/or films.
