A level of English Language allows students to place their own knowledge of written and spoken communication in a more academic framework. The course content is varied and ranges from the study of Twitter to looking at the evolution of the English Language. There are a variety of topics covered on the A level including, Language and Power, Child Language Acquisition, Standard and Non-Standard English, and Language and Gender. We study texts from Early Modern English (1600-1800) up to English in the 21st Century mainly focusing on language use and changes that have occurred post-2000. For the coursework component, students may choose an area of the course in which they want to specialize for their investigation. You will develop your analytical and interpretative skills in relation to spoken and written texts. Through independent research, classroom discussion, and essay writing you will develop your interpersonal and communication skills.
6 GCSEs between 9 to 4 (A*-C) for including 2 of English, Maths or Science. 2 should be at least grade 6 (B). grade 9-5 in GCSE English is highly recommended.
COMPONENT 1 – LANGUAGE CONCEPTS AND ISSUES – 30% – 2HR EXAM. Study of spoken language and other language issues such as language and power. COMPONENT 2 – LANGUAGE CHANGE OVER TIME – 30% – 2HR 15 MINS EXAM. Study of earlier periods of English and more modern areas such as social media COMPONENT 3 – CREATIVE AND CRITICAL USE OF LANGUAGE – 20% – 1HR 45 MINS EXAM. Creative writing – fiction and non-fiction texts. COMPONENT 4 – LANGUAGE AND IDENTITY – 20% A language investigation into a topic of your choice.
