Myerscough College can offer you the opportunity to train at level 3 (A-Level equivalent) at the best land-based College in the North West, to develop a comprehensive understanding of Horticulture, Landscape or Sportsturf, encompassing practical techniques, academic knowledge and technical skills. It is a popular option for both school leavers and successful Level 2 Diploma students. Our facilities are excellent with a new glasshouse space offering four separate growing zones with LED lighting and computerised temperature control. You will work in the Award Winning Myerscough Gardens, helping to maintain a range of plant and shrub borders. Myerscough is an internationally recognised sportsturf industry training provider. It boasts a brand new sportsturf training centre that is equipped with all the latest sportsturf equipment. The College provides learners access to a golf course and several winter games pitches in which to gain experience with their practical skills. The College has established links with employers over many years both in the horticulture landscape and fine turf industries; this has enabled the tutors to provide the best industrial experience for the learners. Students will also experience visits during their studies to top industry venues. The College provides its learners with extremely well qualified industry experienced tutors to deliver their qualifications. The Level 3 Advanced Technical Certificate in Horticulture / Landscape provides you with core practical skills and knowledge, which will equip you to seek employment or further learning and training within the horticultural or landscape industry. Sound practical skills are extremely important when looking to gain employment in these industries. You will learn how to work safely and prepare and operate a range of equipment and machinery. You will study the fundamentals of plant identification, plant health and protection, controlling pests, diseases, disorders and weeds. Health and safety is a fundamental part of the course. The skills listed are core skills, which are required in both industries. The final part of the course is made up of subject specific units to gain skills such as landscape construction of walls and patios or plant production in a domestic and commercial setting in horticulture.
These courses give a good technical training and education providing a vocational alternative to A Levels and the opportunity for successful students to progress to Higher Education. Learners are normally aged 16 or over with an English GCSE at C (4) or higher plus a minimum of three others at C (4) or higher, including Maths or Science.
