Economics is a well regarded and interesting A-level. It covers both micro and macroeconomics. Pupils will develop their quantitative skills and it is suggested that a Grade 7 (minimum) at GCSE mathematics would be very useful. Pupils will learn to become critical thinkers and be able to review current economic policy. The department offers an extensive extra-curricular offering: RES essay competition; IFS Student Investor; Shares4Schools investment competition; Rathbone work experience. The young economists entered the Bank of England Target 2.0 and won both the district and regional finals. The department also hosts regular guest speakers. Recently this has included an Investment Bank recruiter, interview skills specialist, an oil and gas executive and a director from one of the UK's largest recycling companies. The department was also recently awarded the EBEA Quality Mark. This recognised the high standard of teaching and opportunities given to pupils of Economics.
