History is a highly regarded and established subject. The skills learned at this level are desired by universities and employers alike. If you are thinking about a career in law, politics, Civil Service, sociology, psychology, journalism, TV, radio, research, marketing or PR, then History is the subject for you. History really does open the doors to a range of careers: ‘Historians stalk the corridors of power.’ IS THIS COURSE FOR ME? A level History is for anyone with an interest in understanding the events of the past, and how they have been interpreted. The topics and periods that we study are amongst the most influential in British, European and World History, and learning about them will shape your understanding of the world around you today.
Our course centre requirements for all courses are grade 4 or above in 5 subjects including GCSE English Language and GCSE Mathematics with a good attitude to learning. Course center requirements + minimum grade 6 in GCSE History as well as a minimum grade 5 in English Language and English Literature. All students will be considered on an individual basis if they have not studied history before.
On our AQA A-level course, you will study an eclectic range of topics and periods. You will study core units on the Tudor monarchs of England from 1485 to 1603, combined with a Depth Study of Germany from the Weimar Republic to the end of Nazi rule. These two units will be assessed in an exam, at the end of Y13. Your exam will include essay questions and source/interpretation questions. Your coursework will take the form of an independent investigation, allowing you to conduct your own research into African American civil rights! You will also have the opportunity to visit the Durham University library, take part in the lessons from the Auschwitz Project, and other local and overseas visits.
