This course is ideal for students who have an interest in science. It is suitable for students wishing to enter employment in the science sector such as the NHS or to progress to vocational qualifications or other science-related qualifications. It is also an appropriate progression route to higher-level courses at university. The Level 3 BTEC Extended Certificate in Applied Science provides students with a range of science and more general study skills that would be complementary to most learner programs. You will be taught in brand new university standard laboratories. You will be expected to be responsible for your own learning and work with other members of the group as well as independently including practicals. Unit 1 Principles and Applications of Science: you will study some core principles of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. The topics covered include cells, nerve action, atomic structure, quantitative chemistry and waves. This unit is externally assessed. Unit 2 Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques: you will complete 4 pieces of coursework in chromatography, titration and cooling curves. There is also a piece of coursework to reflect on the skills you have developed. This unit is internally assessed. Unit 3 Scientific Investigative Skills: a practical unit where you develop your investigative skills. You will investigate enzymes, plant distribution, diffusion, energy in fuels and electrical circuits. This unit is externally assessed with a practical exam. Unit 8 Physiology of Human Body Systems: you will learn about the musculoskeletal, digestive and lymphatic systems in the human body, the disorders that affect these systems and corrective treatments. This unit is internally assessed through three pieces of coursework.
