Course summary

A Level Business Studies has been developed to build on skills students develop at Key Stage 4, however there are no previous knowledge requirements for this specification. The course builds on, but is not dependent on, students having studied Business Studies. The course is structured into four themes and consists of three externally examined papers. An A Level in Business Studies is an academic qualification, which also has a strong practical application. It is a very popular subject at university, with good career prospects in accounting, personnel, marketing, operations and general management. Whether you end up working for a company or indeed set up your own company, a qualification in Business Studies is an excellent first step into today’s world of work. Theme 1: Marketing and People Students will develop an understanding of: meeting customer needs, the market, marketing mix and strategy, managing people, entrepreneurs and leaders. Theme 2: Managing Business Activities Students will develop an understanding of: raising finance, financial planning, managing finance, resource management, external influences. Theme 3: Business Decisions and Strategy Students will develop an understanding of: business objectives and strategy, business growth, decision-making techniques, assessing competitiveness, managing change. Theme 4: Global Business Students will develop an understanding of: globalization, global markets and business expansion, global marketing, global industries and companies (multinational corporations). The four themes are taught and then assessed at the end of two years by three externally examined papers, each of two hours, and each consisting of two data response questions broken down into a number of parts. Examination on all four themes, loosely based around pre-release material. Themes 1 and 2 look through knowledge of core business concepts and apply them to business contexts to develop a broad understanding of how businesses work. Themes 3 and 4 require students to take a more strategic view of business opportunities and issues.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs at a standard pass grade and at least a grade 4 in GCSE English Language and Mathematics. English 5, Mathematics 5.
