To enrol for A level Mathematics, you must have at least a Grade 7 for GCSE mathematics. However, that alone won't guarantee success. You must have an enquiring mind and enjoy problem solving. Successful students at A level are prepared to persevere and work independently. All mathematicians have experienced that feeling of satisfaction when they solve a challenging problem or master a new concept. If you are also likely to study subjects such as Science, Geography, and Psychology, which have mathematical content, then studying A level Mathematics could well be advantageous. You will cover three areas of Mathematics during the course: Pure Mathematics, Statistics, and Mechanics. Pure topics deal mainly with the manipulation of algebraic functions, solving equations, and rearranging formulae. You will be taught concepts like proof, algebra and functions, coordinate geometry, sequence and series, trigonometry, exponential and logarithms, differentiation, integration, and vectors. Statistics topics deal with the handing and analysing of data in a variety of forms, distribution of data probability, correlation, regression. You will study topics such as statistical sampling, data presentation and interpretation, probability, statistical distribution, and statistical hypothesis testing. Mechanics topics deals with kinematics, forces, and Newton's laws, and quantities and units of mechanics.

You will be assessed in three external written examinations. Two papers will cover Pure Mathematics and the third will cover Statistics and Mechanics. Each paper takes 2 hours, is worth a third of the course, and features structured questions that get more challenging as you attempt the paper.
