Course summary

Choose to study Psychology at Brighouse Sixth Form College and study the perfect course for you if you are interested in people and their behaviour, for example why some people become mass murderers (we allow you to do a research topic on serial killers such as Ted Bundy), why some people may be afraid of spiders, why some people are extremely fussy eaters and the evidence to suggest London taxi drivers have a larger hippocampus! You need to be motivated and enthusiastic and have a passion for learning about human behaviour. Students studying this A level will aim to consider ‘What is “normal” and who decides this?’ and ‘Why do people behave in “abnormal” ways?’. We study classic case studies such as the Stamford Prison experiment conducted by Zimbardo and Milligram's experiment which involved giving participants electrical shocks; we also delve into the psychodynamic approach based on the work of Freud and why he links everything back to childhood experiences. As the course progresses we look at topics such as forensic psychology and the application of techniques such as offender profiling; how we form relationships and the different explanations around this; and the continued debate of whether as individuals our actions are the result of nature which is the biological approach or nurture which is more closely linked to the humanistic approach and research developed by Maslow. Psychology is a new subject to many of our students and we aim to build up your knowledge and understanding through a delivery which tries to get you involved in some practical pieces of research alongside more traditional classroom-based activities. Throughout the Psychology course, you will also learn the skills of analysis, and evaluation and use mathematical skills to interpret and calculate results. This is truly a Social Science course which balances science and empirical study with human reaction and interaction. Paper 1: Introductory Topics in Psychology Content covered such as social influence, memory, attachment and psychopathology.
