It covers any system that will store, retrieve, manipulate, transmit or receive information electronically and also the programming and creation of these systems. IT will address all the uses of digital technology that already exist to help individuals, businesses and organisations use information. These include personal computers, digital television, email, and robots. IT is not only about the use of digital data but also about the way these different uses interact with each other. If you enjoy ICT and you are interested in how it is used in businesses to help them operate, how it can be used to help promote and market a business through the use of social media or even how it is used to create, set up and run websites, then this course is for you. You will learn about practical applications such as Adobe Dreamweaver and learn skills used in the IT industry today. Over the course, you will build a portfolio of work which will help you to develop written, analytical and evaluative skills throughout the course. This portfolio can also be used as practical evidence to show potential employers that you have experience with different areas of ICT. This course builds on a range of skills and knowledge that a lot of students would already have, either through their interaction with ICT daily, or through study at KS4 in Computer Science or the DIT course. It also introduces skills in hardware and software which will act as a springboard to success in future IT roles. The units are varied and will give you lots of opportunities to learn new skills and try out software you are unfamiliar with.
At least a Level 2 pass in IT if taken. Grade 4 in English and Maths.
The course consists of four mandatory units of work including, Information Technology Systems, Using Social Media in Business and Creating Systems to Manage Information. Of these, two are assessed with examination and the rest by internally assessed coursework.
