In Sociology we look at things you are familiar with but rise above common sense thinking and really try and understand the world around us. Sociology allows us to see the often-hidden connections that shape us as individuals and determine our life chances. Sociologists are also interested in how we behave around other people and what factors offer opportunities and constraints on our life chances, such as income and wealth, gender, ethnic groups and more. You will study areas like identity and culture, families and households, education, crime and deviance and research methods. Lessons will involve studying and discussing sociological problems. During the course you will: • Develop awareness and understanding of the patterns of behaviour in our society • Consider contemporary debates and problems • Learn to understand methods used to collect data • Explore current social issues, as well as earlier studies and theories. • Explore different areas of society.
Grades 9-4 in English, Maths and three or more GCSEs. There is no requirement for you to have studied Sociology at GCSE.
