Course summary

This subject offers students a theoretical and practical understanding of the mass media, academic methods for analysing media texts and the opportunity to create their products. Students gain insight into a range of technological means of communication, such as television, film, print, advertising and the Internet. The course also provides the critical tools necessary to carry out research investigations into the media and create high-quality work in various formats such as film and print. There will be a mixture of classroom teaching and independent learning. In class, a full range of approaches will be used including individual, group work and whole class activities and discussions centred around clear learning objectives relating to the syllabus and media texts and industries. With a qualification in Media Studies you could go on to Higher Education or work in the media or a related field. Media Studies offers students the opportunity to use a variety of transferable technical and analytical skills, which equip the individual for life in a media-saturated world.

Entry requirements

6 GCSE/BTEC passes at Level 4 or above. It is desirable to achieve a Level 5 or above in this subject at GCSE (or a related subject).

How you'll be assessed

Two-year A-Level Two written exams (70%) and one coursework project (30%). Component 1 exam (30%). Component 2 exam (40%). Coursework project (30%) An individual cross-media project based on producing two forms of media from a choice of set briefs relating to the media forms of television, music advertising and marketing, film advertising and marketing or magazines.
