Course summary

Economics is the study of choice and decision-making in a world of limited resources. Economics is divided into two distinct sections; microeconomics and macroeconomics. Microeconomics examines the choices faced by individual consumers, firms and markets, while macroeconomics examines the economy as a whole by investigating choices made by governments and multinational companies. We have a strong passion for applying current economic events and knowledge into our teaching practices and appreciate how this develops students’ understanding, so you will be expected to show an interest in international and European current affairs. The course will help develop an interest in the economic environment and lay the foundations for advanced study in university or the business world. You will learn how people make decisions. For example, how do consumers choose how to spend their money? Why do businesses set their prices at a particular level? How can the government stop a business from polluting the environment or improve the general economic performance of the country? You will learn about economic problems such as debt and unemployment, and gain a sense of how decisions made in other countries impact the UK economy overall.
