It is about digging below the surface, to find out what is going on. Sociology is a challenging subject, where you will have the opportunity to develop your thinking skills. During the course, you will use the sociological tools of theory, research and concepts to help you evaluate the world around you. The course aims to encourage you to develop a broad knowledge and a critical understanding of the contemporary and changing world that surrounds you. A Level of Sociology will nurture your inquiring mind and allow you to debate with like-minded people the issues that impact our daily lives. You have the opportunity to understand and evaluate sociological methodology through having an active involvement in the sociological research process. The central focus of A Level Sociology is the study of UK society today; this will be taught and understood through a variety of inspiring topics which include, culture and identity, beliefs, education, crime and theory and methods. In addition, you will have the opportunity to understand and debate the significance of social issues, such as conflict and consensus, free and control, and the role of values in society
Grade 6 in Sociology if taken and a grade 5 in English.
Examinations take place at the end of the two-year course and will comprise three two-hour examinations. The examinations will test your knowledge and understanding, as well as your ability to accurately apply and evaluate key sociological concepts and theories. There is no coursework or controlled assessment.
