During the Art, Craft, and Design course students will be introduced to a variety of experiences that explore a range of two-dimensional and/or three-dimensional media, processes, and techniques. Students will experience both traditional and new media such as drawing, painting, printing, sculpture, photography, and digital manipulation for different purposes and in a variety of methods and scales. Students will use sketchbooks/workbooks/journals to underpin their work where appropriate. Students will explore relevant images, artifacts, and resources relating to a range of art, craft, and design, from the past and contemporary practice, including European and non-European examples which is integral to the investigating and making processes. Students will learn analytical skills in response to these examples which will be demonstrated through practical and critical activities informing their understanding of different styles, genres, and traditions. Students will be guided through the four assessment objectives that will contextualize the content and skills presented in their portfolio. They learn the importance of communication, visual language, identity, and expression as part of the process.
Students wanting to study at EHC are required to achieve 5 or more standard GCSE passes or higher (grade 4 or higher) including GCSE Maths and either English Language or English Literature at a grade 4 or above. Achieving a grade 5 or higher in GCSE Art & Design is desirable.
All work is finally assessed at the end of Year Two. Component 1 – Personal Investigation 96 marks. 60% of A Level. NEA (non-exam assessment): a portfolio of work, outcome(s), and 1000-3000 word essay. Component 2 – Externally Set Assignment (non-exam assessment followed by 15-hour external exam). 96 marks. 40% of A Level. Portfolio of preparatory work, and an outcome generated in a 15-hour exam session in the summer.
