Course summary

Sociology can enable you to understand and explain the world you live in and your situation within it. It is the study of how society is organized and the analysis of theories that seek to explain the “why?” of how societies work, including the roles of institutions such as education, the law, the family, and religion. Probably the most important thing about sociology is that it enables us to make sense of the rapidly changing world that we live in and to examine issues from fresh and varied perspectives. Sociology enables us to understand ourselves including the way we think, behave, and feel: our very sense of identity is socially produced. Units Studied Year 1 • Education and methods in context (Paper 1) • Methods in context (Paper 1) • Families & Households (Paper 2) Year 2 • Media (Paper 2) • Crime and Deviance (Paper 3) • Theory and Methods (Paper 3) Sociology equips you with a broad range of transferable skills, so a very wide range of employers and universities view Sociology as highly relevant. It is particularly useful for professions (including Law, medicine, education, the media, and business) where knowledge of society is required. Beyond this, many study Sociology for the personal enrichment it brings them, broadening their minds and enabling them to see their world in new and interesting ways.
