This course will appeal to pupils who have already shown a strong performance in GCSE. The focus of the specification is on participation and performance in physical activity as part of a balanced, active, and healthy lifestyle. The course is mainly academic with a greater breadth of sporting issues covered than at GCSE. Students will be interested in furthering their ability and understanding of topics such as anatomy, energy systems, the culture of the sport, funding of sport, and skill classification in classroom and practical situations. There are elements of self-study and an expectation that students’ interest in the subject will lead them to keep informed of current developments in sport which will enable them to apply their academic knowledge to a range of situations. The course that runs is OCR A Level PE.
Grade 6 in GCSE Physical Education and a Grade 4 in GCSE English and Science is a minimum requirement. If GCSE PE is not taken then a Grade 5 in GCSE English and Science is required. Regular participation in a sport outside of school is essential.
