Course summary

To contextualise the knowledge needed to access the rest of the course. Both topics are taught chronologically to aid with this (Britain is taught thematically later). This builds upon knowledge acquired at GCSE including American West, WWI Medicine and Nazi Germany. Focus on chronology and simple cause and consequence as preparation for students to consider more challenging second order concepts. Greater focus on AO1 (Knowledge). Britain focuses on breath and larger periods of time; America is a depth study and more focused (reflected in the content titles above). Students focus on Britain and the USA which cover a similar time-period (20th Century) and similar themes (e.g. immigration; role of women; role of media; impact of economy; industrial relations). The courses can confirm and contrast certain patterns and trends in both countries. America and Britain have a “special relationship” reinforces British Values such as democracy and importance of the welfare state (NHS). Students move towards considering more second order concepts such as change and continuity and significance.
