Course summary

Whether it is your own welfare you are aiming to improve, or the welfare of others, Economics gives us an insight into the levers of wealth and wellbeing. Should interest rates be kept at their current very low levels? Is Amazon too powerful? Should the government spend even more money to help secure steady growth in economy? Can the British Government continue to fund the NHS? Should the government tax ‘fatty’ foods to fund the NHS? Recent events, ranging from the banking crisis to Brexit have brought a number of changes to the economic landscape and brought the subject to the fore of many debates. Studying Economics will help you understand many of these real world events. Course Content Year 12 • Operation of markets and Market Failure. • National economy in a global context. Year 13 • Individuals, firms, markets and market failure. • The national and international economy. Opportunities and experiences in Economics • Visits and talks including Business/Economics masterclass at Leeds University. • North East Sixth Form Management Games. • Student Investor Challenge.

Entry requirements

You will need to achieve five or more “4” grades, including Grade 5 in Maths or will be studying Core Maths.

How you'll be assessed

At the end of Year 13 you will take three papers, each 2 hours long. Paper 1 - Markets and market failure. Paper 2 - National and international economy. Paper 3 - Economic principles and issues.
