Course summary

Physicists explore the fundamental nature of almost everything we know. They probe the furthest reaches of the earth to study the smallest pieces of matter. Join them to enter a world deep beneath the surface of normal human experience. First year of A Level: • Measurements and their errors • Particles and radiation • Waves • Mechanics and energy • Electricity Second year of A Level: • Further mechanics and thermal physics • Fields • Nuclear physics • Plus an option (e.g. astrophysics)

Entry requirements

• 5+ GCSEs at grades 9-4 including a strong pass (grade 5) in English and maths • Grade 6 in Maths entry requirement to study Maths A Level • Grade 6 in Science and maths recommended to study Biology, Chemistry and Physics A Levels. Students must have sat the higher tier papers for Science and Maths. * The option to take 4 A’ Level courses will be made only in exceptional circumstances.

How you'll be assessed

Throughout the course, you will carry out practical activities. Your performance during practicals will be assessed. There are three exams at the end of the two years for A Level, all of which are two hours long. At least 15% of the marks for A Level physics are based on what you learn in your practicals. Many universities ask for a pass in the practical elements.
