Course summary

- Study topics such as calculus, coordinate geometry, trigonometry and vectors. - Apply this 'pure' knowledge to applied topics within Statistics and Mechanics. - Develop excellent transferable problem-solving skills. - A highly desirable qualification supports your aspirations for further study. Mathematics is a very rewarding course, building on many of the skills you developed at GCSE, including algebra, trigonometry, probability, vectors and mathematical modelling. You will develop a logical approach to analytical and problem-solving skills which are highly transferable. A Level Maths is a prerequisite for many STEM and economics degree courses and it supports many other subjects such as geography and finance. The course builds upon the work you have studied at GCSE Higher level – for instance, having studied gradients of lines at GCSE, you will study gradients of curves at A Level - which you will discover are variable!! You then apply this knowledge as you explore rates of change of variables including populations, velocity, etc. You will also further enhance your knowledge of trigonometry, solving more complex equations involving sin, cos and tan. The course is split up into two-thirds Pure Mathematics and one-third Applied Mathematics, split into Mechanics and Statistics. Pure topics include algebra, trigonometry, coordinate geometry, vectors and functions. Mechanics topics include vectors, moments, kinematics and projectiles, while statistics topics include hypothesis testing, histograms and probability.
