Course summary

Choose Biology at Brighouse Sixth Form College and study a fascinating and challenging subject; this A-level allows students to start to understand the amazing diversity and complexity of life. Topics range from biological molecules to the environment around us. The course contains significant sections on human biology, plant biology, ecology, genetics and gene technology. All of the theory has relevance to the world around us, whether it is the functioning of our bodies, or new technologies being used in genetic modification. Students will develop their knowledge and understanding of a wide range of processes, techniques and procedures. They will have to apply this knowledge in a variety of practical and theoretical contexts, and when handling quantitative and qualitative data. The ability to analyse, interpret and evaluate biological information, ideas and evidence is also very important. Students will be expected to make appropriate judgements, reach conclusions, and develop and refine practical designs and procedures. A practical endorsement will be assessed by teachers; students will be expected to develop and demonstrate competency in a range of skills that are not assessable in written exams. Students will achieve a pass or fail in this area which will appear on their qualification certificate; this assessment will not contribute to their overall grade. An A-level in Biology will be looked on favourably by any university or future employer. It will be particularly useful for those wishing to pursue a career in the biological sciences or healthcare sector. This encompasses a wide range of disciplines, such as Zoology, Biochemistry, Physiotherapy and Medicine.
