Course summary

Choose to study Religious Studies at Brighouse Sixth Form College and learn that ever since humankind started to think, philosophy and religion have been fundamental parts of our development. As people look into the vastness of space or witness the miracle of birth, they contemplate the meaning of life and their mortality. In the 21st century, philosophy, ethics and religion still address the same eternal human questions about life and death, values and relationships, right and wrong. If you are interested in current affairs, people, different cultures and the debates about the meaning of life, then this could be the course for you. A-level Religious Studies requires the study of Philosophy and Ethics in Year 12 and an in-depth study of one world religion in Year 13, the beliefs and teachings of which are then applied to various philosophical concepts and ethical issues. Key areas of study include life after death, arguments for the existence of God, the challenge from science, religious identity, free will and moral responsibility. Students will be challenged to consider how religion is influenced by and influences a range of ethical issues. Paper 1: Philosophy of Religion and Ethics Section A: content such as arguments for the existence of God, evil and suffering, miracles, religious language death and the afterlife. Section B: the application of natural moral law, situation and virtue ethics, issues of human and non-human life and death: abortion, euthanasia, designer babies, capital punishment, blood sports. The introduction to meta-ethics and the meaning of right and wrong, free will and moral responsibility and conscience as a moral guide. Paper 2: Study of Religion and Dialogues The study of Christianity its religious beliefs, teachings, values and practices, ethical issues such as gender, and sexuality, the challenge of evolution and the Big Bang Theory, challenges of secularism and the ‘Dawkins Delusion,’ migration and religious pluralism. The dialogue between Christianity and philosophy and between Christianity and ethics.
