Law is a popular and academically demanding subject, which requires a wide range of skills. You will be expected to take part in class discussions, and mock trials and engage in debates about many aspects of the legal system. For example: What are the appropriate offences or defences in a particular scenario? Is the system fair? Is the law a good idea for society as a whole? Where should the balance between individual freedom and collective security lie? Paper 1: The nature of law and the English legal system - Criminal Law Topics covered include the nature and role of law, law & morality, justice, Parliamentary law-making, elements of a crime: Actus Reus, Causation, Mens Rea and criminal offences such as murder, voluntary manslaughter and assault. Paper 2: The nature of law and the English legal system – Tort Law Topics will develop an understanding of civil courts and appeal system, the legal profession: barristers, solicitors and liability in negligence for physical injury to people and property damage. Paper 3: The nature of law and the English legal system – Human Rights Law Topics include human rights rules and theories such as the right to life, right to liberty, freedom of expression and balancing conflicting rights/interests.
