Year 12: · Listening, analysis, and contextual understanding: Students study two areas: The Western Classical Tradition and the development of the Symphony (including set works) is compulsory; the other area can be chosen from pop and Rock, Musical Theatre, and Jazz. · Performing Music: Gain as much experience as possible in performing in both a solo and ensemble setting in preparation for the performance assessment in Year 13. Instrumental lessons will be provided free of charge for each pupil’s chosen instrument. · Composing Music: students will need to write one composition in Year 12, a ‘free’ composition, which can be revisited in Year 13. Year 13: · Listening, analysis, and contextual understanding: Students study one further area of study, to build on topics learned in Year 12. The further topic can be chosen from either Western Classical Music in the 20th or 21st Century. · Performing Music: A solo recital of up to twelve minutes · Composing Music: students will need to write up to three compositions depending on the chosen weighting option (see note below).
You must have achieved five GCSEs at grade 4 or better. At least a grade 4 in GCSE Music. Students who have not studied Music at GCSE should have Grade 5 Theory and Grade 5 Practical on an instrument.
Component 1: 40% - Exam Paper (2 hours 15 minutes). Component 2: 25% (A) - 35% (B) - Performance: Externally Assessed. Component 3: 25% (B) - 35% (A)- Composition: Externally Assessed. The length and weighting of performance and composition will be dependent on the option (A/B) chosen by the student.
