Course summary

You will probably choose to study Music if you are a competent instrumentalist or singer and/or have a strong interest in composing your own music. You may wish to study Music in higher education either on an academic degree course or on a more practically based course for performers. The A Level music course is a valuable qualification in its own right as it not only demonstrates academic, practical, and creative skills but also highlights your qualities of self-discipline and commitment. COURSE STRUCTURE & CONTENT The course is made up of the following three units: Component 1 – Appraising Music • The Western Classical Tradition. • A choice from Pop music, Musical theatre, Music and media, Jazz, or Art Music since 1910. Component 2 – Composing • A 10-minute performance as solo or ensemble including the option of music technology. Component 3 – Performing • You will produce two compositions; one from a brief and another free composition. Upon successful completion of the first year, you will progress to the second year of the course.
