Course summary

History is the study of people. It is an exploration of their strengths, their weaknesses, their successes, and above all their impact on those around them. . By studying History we develop an understanding of human behavior and how and why we as individuals follow the lives we lead. We learn how to question accepted ideas and to develop and sustain arguments in order to gain a true understanding of the world we live in and our part within it. We learn how to appreciate different opinions and understand the purpose of people’s actions. We identify patterns, challenge orthodoxies, and form opinions. In sum, we develop a full understanding of all that surrounds us. Unit 1: Russia 1917–91: from Lenin to Yeltsin Units 1 and 2 are linked by the common theme of communist rule during the twentieth century. Unit 1 comprises a study of the key political, social, and economic features of communist rule in Russia during the twentieth century, an era that saw its authority and influence rise to the status of a superpower, only to diminish and decline later in the century. Unit 2: Mao’s China 1949–76 This unit comprises a study of the transformation of communist China in the years 1949–76. Unit 3: Rebellion and disorder under the Tudors, 1485–1603 This option comprises two parts: the Aspects in breadth focus on long-term changes and the Aspects in depth, which focus in detail on key episodes. Unit 4: Coursework The purpose of the coursework assignment is to enable students to develop skills in the analysis and evaluation of interpretations of history in a chosen question, problem, or issue, as part of an independently researched assignment.
