The A Level course in Literature offers students the opportunity to read, discuss, and write about texts from differing genres and contexts. You will study a range of texts and engage with critical interpretations and contextual explorations throughout. The following components are studied at A Level: Prose: Dracula by Bram Stoker & The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde Drama: Othello by William Shakespeare & A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams Poetry: Modernism & Contemporary Poetry Coursework: Choice of texts A qualification in English Literature is useful for a range of courses and careers, even if those paths do not involve Literature, as it demonstrates that you can think independently, research, write fluently, read widely, and discuss in depth. The skills you learn whilst studying English will also stay with you throughout your life, whenever you read a book, watch a film, or hear a speech, and will, of course, inform your writing.
The minimum requirement is three 6 grades and three others at a 5 grade. At least a grade 4 or above in English and Mathematics. Grade 6 in both GCSE English Language and GCSE English Literature.
You will be expected to come to lessons ready to discuss the texts and issues arising from them. Reading widely, listening to other people’s ideas, and contributing your own are excellent ways to learn. Be prepared to challenge and be challenged in a supportive and cooperative learning environment. You will need to develop good note-taking skills, annotate your texts, and articulate your point of view in light of other interpretations.
