This course provides an exciting and enjoyable pathway through the Forensic Science and Criminal Investigation qualification to help you either enter employment or proceed to Higher Education. This course will provide opportunities for you to become employed in the forensic science, applied science industry or other businesses that use scientific knowledge and skills. It will also prepare you for Higher Education science courses. You will develop scientific analytical-thinking skills through the use of biological, chemical, and physical evidence. You will remain impartial, develop a chronology, and provide scientific justification for analysis and you will present facts in a non-biased manner through detailed investigations. This course requires you to practically explore the principles of science that form the basis of some of the analytical techniques commonly used to investigate crimes, as well as to carry out analysis on forensic evidence. It also requires you to interpret the results and report valid conclusions. By the end of the course, you will be able to produce a coherent forensic expert report, with the interpretation of findings from the analysis of evidence. Half of the course is the same as the Applied Science Extended Certificate, the second half will feature: • Applications of Criminology • Forensic Investigation Procedures in Practice • Criminal Investigation Procedures in Practice An optional unit linked to Forensic Science Either: • Forensic Fire Investigation • Forensic Genetics • Environmental Forensics • Forensic Photography • Forensic Road Traffic Collision Investigation • Forensic Anthropology and Archaeology • Practical Chemical Analysis
A minimum of 5 GCSE passes at a minimum of Grade 4 (Grade C for Legacy qualifications).
You will have a mixture of formal examinations and coursework. There is 46% external examination and 54% internally assessed coursework.
