Course summary

English Language and Literature is a very popular A-Level subject nationally, and with good reason, as students already possess key skills and an interest in the subject from Key 3 and GCSE studies, but it also offers something significantly different from the A-Level Literature course. English Language and Literature at A-Level integrates literary and linguistic study, encouraging students to engage creatively and critically with a wide range of texts, considering the way language choices create representations but also encouraging your skills as a producer and interpreter of language. Words create worlds, both in literature and beyond, and this subject offers the opportunity to explore this in depth. Paper 1 Telling Stories: Remembered Places - the representation of place. Students study the AQA Anthology: Paris, exploring speech and other genres and studying linguistic and generic features, alongside narrative, representation, and viewpoints in different periods. Imagined Worlds - point of view and genre in prose. Students study a prose text (Dracula, The Handmaid's Tale, or The Lovely Bones). Poetic Voices - the forms and functions of poetic voice. Students study one of four poets from the AQA Poetic Voices Anthology (John Donne, Robert Browning, Carol Ann Duffy, or Seamus Heaney). Paper 2 Exploring Conflict: Writing about Society - the Role of the Individual in Society and Re-creative Writing based on set texts. Students study a prose text (The Great Gatsby or The Kite Runner). Critical commentary - evaluating own writing. Students learn how to write a critical commentary to evaluate their writing. They explain their own language choices and analyze their intentions in reshaping the writer's original material. Dramatic Encounters - conflict in drama. Students study one of two drama texts (Othello or A Streetcar Named Desire). Non-exam assessment: Making Connections. Students execute a personal investigation that explores a specific technique or theme of their choice, in both literary and non-literary discourse e.g. an exploration of the idea of character in literature and other texts or an exploration of speech features in literature and real-world communication. You will study four texts in preparation for the A-level, together with further investigation of an anthology. You will also undertake your independent investigation, reading and analyzing a range of literary and real-world texts of your own choice, to complete a study for the coursework component.
