Course summary

Advanced level Mathematics is quoted as an essential entrance qualification for many higher-level studies in Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering, Physics, and Computing. Units Studied Year 12 Pure Mathematics - The study of Pure Mathematics will extend the knowledge gained from the GCSE course and will introduce many new topics. Derivation of formulae and solving equations are vital elements, and so the efficient use of algebra is of vital importance. Mechanics - Students will study the modelling process, and use of SI units, and vectors. Mathematical techniques such as the analysis of graphs and calculus will be used to solve problems involving kinematics and gravity. Statistics - Real-world situations will be modelled so that precise, logical deductions and inferences may be made. Areas studied include sampling methods, graphical representation of data, probability theory, types of distributions, regression and correlation. Units Studied Year 13 Pure Mathematics - Extending the study of Pure Mathematics in more depth than at AS level. Areas to be studied include functions, trigonometric identities and calculus. Mechanics - More advanced techniques will be used to solve problems involving friction, rotary motion and projectiles. Statistics - Students’ statistical skills will be extended to include the study of continuous distributions, modelling and hypothesis testing.
