Course summary

The BTEC Level 3 course is a natural progression for any student who wishes to continue onto Higher Education or work within the Sports Field. Units Studied: Unit 1 Anatomy & Physiology - Written examination set and marked by the exam board (Pearson). 90-minute exam - 80 marks. Availability: exam in January & May/June. Unit 2 Fitness Training and Programming for Health, Sport & Wellbeing - A task set and marked by the exam board (Pearson) and completed under supervised conditions. In part A learners will be provided with a case study two weeks before a supervised assessment period in order to carry out research. In part B, the supervised assessment period is two and half hour in a period timetabled by Pearson. Written submission - 60 marks. Availability: exam in January & May/June. Unit 3 Professional Development in the Sports Industry - Internally assessed coursework. Unit 5 Application of Fitness Testing - Internally assessed coursework.

Entry requirements

A minimum of 5 grades at level 9-4 at GCSE level and/or BTEC Level 2 Pass. Grade 4 or above in English Language and Mathematics. Level 2 Pass in Sport and 4 in English Language. Grade 5 or above in GCSE Science and a commitment to sports outside core PE if not studied.

How you'll be assessed

There are 3 mandatory units that students need to complete – 2 are externally assessed. There is practical content to all of the units though a student’s ability to play sports to a particular standard will not be assessed. 67% of the course is externally assessed (one exam and one unit marked externally see table below). The remaining 33% are two internally assessed units.
