Course summary

This course offers you the opportunity to develop a range of skills and insights into the fascinating world of theatre. It is a multi-disciplinary subject that can combine well with almost any other A-level option. A good Drama qualification is always an impressive feature of UCAS forms and CVs, indicating to potential employers and universities that you are someone who can express themselves and the ideas of others with confidence and skill, can work as a supportive member of a team, and has an artistic, creative side to their personality. Unit 1 Devising: You will devise a piece of drama that is influenced by a play given to you by your teacher. Your work will be influenced by a practitioner and you will perform it in front of an invited audience. You will also write a devising portfolio about your devising process. You can work on this as a performer or designer. Unit 2 Text in Performance: This is a practical exploration and interpretation of two extracts from two separate plays. You will perform both extracts in front of an examiner in Year 13. One play extract will be as a group of three or more and the other play extract will be a monologue or duologue. You can work on this as a performer or a designer. Unit 3 Written Examination: In this exam-based unit you will study two set plays from different times and genres. Currently, we are studying 'That Face' by Polly Stenham and 'Antigone' by Sophocles. You also have to answer a question in the exam about a live theatre performance you have seen, so we visit the theatre regularly over the two years. You will be required to take part in workshops, drama productions, and trips to the theatre. You must be willing and able to attend rehearsals after school. You need to be able to work independently with focus and determination, and you must have a strong desire to develop your acting and/or technical/design skills further. Drama and Theatre Studies complement a range of subjects and are useful in developing critical thinking and analytical skills, textual analysis and interpretation, collaboration, building confidence, and improving presentation skills in a range of careers.
