Course summary

Studying core maths will give you an insight into a wide array of maths used in day-to-day life. Whether it be managing student finance, organising a multi-staged project or a range of other activities, you will use the skills you learn in core maths daily. The course will extend your GCSE knowledge of probability, estimation and data and link them to a wide selection of real-world scenarios. There is also a real emphasis on the use of technology, using programs such as Excel to model larger-scale real-life situations. This course is a level 3 qualification, that is completed in one year. The first term will translate your GCSE thinking into the required level, as well as explore higher-level skills such as Fermi Estimations. After Christmas you will spend time looking at financial maths as well as critical path analysis; the study of project management. Given the cross-curricular links of core maths, this course will support your studies in subjects such as psychology, business, economics as well as all the sciences.

Entry requirements

Students need to have passed GCSE maths (4 or above) and, if necessary, be committed to the demands of taking the course in addition to their normal 3 A Levels. A good understanding of higher-tier maths is preferable.

How you'll be assessed

There is no coursework for core maths, with an assessment comprising of two 90-minute papers, sat in the summer exam window. The exams are underpinned by pre-release material, which you will receive several weeks before the exam. Several exam questions will be based on this information and you will be supported by your teachers as to how to utilise it.
