Course summary

The extended certificate consists of four units. Two Internal pieces of coursework and two external exams. The first piece of coursework looks at Social Media. You will create a presentation for local business owners, who have little understanding of the concept but would like to incorporate this new and exciting field to promote their business. The second piece of coursework allows you to investigate spreadsheet modelling and develop a real model for a local gym. The first external exam is a five-hour computer-based exam covered over two days. In the exam, you will be given a scenario and then asked to produce complex database tasks to meet client needs. The final exam is a two-hour written exam that covers the key principles of ICT. This includes topics such as virtual reality, moral and ethical obligations within ICT use along with the principles of social media and how it works.

Entry requirements

Students must achieve a minimum of a Merit in ICT at GCSE level and at least a grade 4 in English language or literature.

How you'll be assessed

58% of the course consists of two external exams. The other 42% of the course is made up of two pieces of coursework. There is an option to take this as a Double A Level called the BTEC National Diploma in IT which consists of the above four units and an additional four units which include Project Management, Web Development, Programming and Cyber Security.
