Unit 1: Tragedy You will study 3 texts from the tragic tradition: Shakespeare's Othello; Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman and a selection of poetry by John Keats. Unit 2: Political and Social Protest Writing You will study 3 of the following texts: The Kite Runner; Harvest; A Doll's House and poetry by Tony Harrison.
Students must achieve at least a grade 6 6 in English language and English literature. You must have enthusiasm for reading a wide range of texts and you must be able to demonstrate clear written communication skills.
English literature is assessed with 2 exams at the end of year 13. One is a paper on tragedy which has questions on Othello, Death of a Salesman and Keats and the second is on political and social protest literature with 2 sections on a range of texts we have studied and one section on an unseen text. The exams are worth 80% of the final grade, the other 20% comes from 2 coursework essays which apply a critical lens to a novel and a collection of poetry.
